WELCOME TO THE UNO PHYSICS DEPARTMENT
A message from the department chair...

E= mc2.

Everyone knows the equation. But how many know what it means? How did Einstein arrive at this simple but profound equation that overturned at a stroke much of what had been so certainly known at the time?

Newton. Maxwell. Einstein. Schrödinger. Bohr. Feynman. Gell-Mann. Hawking. Geniuses who have changed our perceptions of how the universe works. Physicists.

Come and follow in the footsteps of genius. Come and explore the inner workings of reality itself. Come and study physics with us.

You don’t have to be a genius to study the works of these geniuses. You only need common sense, a certain competence in mathematics, and, most importantly, a curiosity about the world about you. We provide the rest.

The Physics Department at the University of New Orleans is a dynamic group of physicists and physics educators offering research opportunities in material science, microstructure research, signals processing, image analysis, magnetism and magnetic materials, optical physics, particle physics, and astrophysics. We seek to involve students in research efforts at all levels, from undergraduate majors through graduate students in our Bachelor of Science in Physics, Master of Physics, Master of Applied Physics, and Doctor of Engineering and Applied Sciences programs.

We can’t promise you will rival Einstein or Hawking in fame. We can promise you an amazing and enriching experience in achieving a deep understanding of the workings of the world, and pretty good employment prospects as well.

Come study physics with us.

Sincerely,

C. Gregory Seab
